A branch of Kabuki and Ningyo Joruri. During the Shoo to Kanbun period (1652-73), in the village of Hanyu in Shimousa Province (present-day Mitukaido City, Ibaraki Prefecture), an ugly woman named Rui was driven mad by jealousy and killed by her husband Yoemon in the Kinugawa River. The family was haunted by the grudge, but was freed by the prayers of the pilgrim Yuten, who was traveling around the country. This story of the Hozoji Temple karma spread to the cities with the opening of the Hozoji Temple and the publication of "Tales of the Dead and Freedom." This story was first adapted into Kabuki in "Ozumo Fujito Genji" (1731). After Date Kurabe Okuni Kabuki (1778), his works were often cast in period dramas based on the Date Disturbance, and the plot in which the heroine looks in the mirror and realizes she is ugly, and is then killed out of jealousy at her husband's loyalty to his master, Princess Utagata, created a long line of plays.
