John La Farge
1835‐1910
American painter. Born in New York to French immigrants. Traveling to Europe in 1856, he first became interested in the Barbizon School and then the Pre-Raphaelites. After returning to Japan, he experimented with French Impressionist techniques in Newport from 1859. It was around this time that he discovered Hokusai, and in 1870 he wrote On Japanese Art. In the 1870s he moved into the realm of murals and stained glass, becoming a central figure in the American Arts and Crafts movement. He came to Japan in 1886, and after returning to Japan he produced a mural for the Church of the Ascension in New York (1887) based on the scenery of Nikko, as well as other works that incorporated Japanese art.
