Chemical formula: H 4 P 2 O 7 . Also known as diphosphoric acid. It is a tetrabasic acid formed by dehydration condensation of orthophosphoric acid H 3 PO 4 . It is produced by heating and dehydrating orthophosphoric acid (85%) at about 180°C under reduced pressure, or by adding a calculated amount of diphosphorus pentoxide. 4H 3 PO 4 + P 2 O 5 - → 3H 4 P 2 O 7 Colorless needle-like crystals or glassy mass. The normal solid is type I (melting point 54.3°C), and when heated to about 50°C in a sealed tube, it transforms into type II (melting point 71.5°C).
