...Several right-wing groups were organized by reactionary landowners, merchants, clergy, and others. The most influential of these was the Russian National Union (Soyuz russkogo naroda), which was formed in October 1905. With the covert support of government officials, it promoted order, peace, and loyalty to the Tsar, and published newspapers and pamphlets attacking the intelligentsia and the Jews. It had branches throughout Russia, but did not have a large number of members. However, its radical words and actions attracted a section of the population with conservative sentiments, and often became the trigger for the persecution of the Jews (pogroms).
