British female novelist. Born in London in the same year that Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, the pioneer of Gothic novels, was published, she herself wrote representative Gothic novels, The Mystery of Udolpho (1794) and The Italian (1797, translated into Japanese as The Tragedy of Italy). She excelled in her descriptions of the exotic, awe-inspiring landscapes of France and Italy, as well as her delicate sensibility, and gained popularity for her bizarre plots. Unlike Walpole, she did not have a penchant for the supernatural, and her works are characterized by their rational explanations of the bizarre. She had a major influence on Scott, Austen, and others.
