…The representative writers of this period include Gil Vicente, who left behind many religious and genre plays, and whose epic poems are said to be representative of European literature of the Renaissance. Other writers include Luís de Camões, who wrote Us Lusíadas (1572), Francisco de Sá de Miranda (1481?-1558), a lyric poet who stayed in Italy and introduced many new poetic forms and techniques from Italy to Portugal, and Bernardim Ribeiro, who is said to have heralded the beginning of modern Portuguese novels. Due to Portugal's annexation by Spain from 1580 to 1640, as well as the Counter-Reformation and the Inquisition, literary activity suddenly and rapidly declined at the end of the 16th century. …
