Charles Sealsfield

Austrian author. His real name was Karl Postl. Born in southern Moravia, he entered a Catholic monastery in Prague, but escaped in 1823 and fled to America with the help of the Freemasons. A few years later, he returned to Europe under a pseudonym and settled in Switzerland. He wrote works in both English and German criticizing Metternich's reactionary politics and praising American democracy, and he beautifully depicted the vibrant life of the New World in novels such as The Cabin Book (1841). オーストリアの作家。本名カール･ポストルKarl Postl。モラビア南部に生まれ，プラハのカトリック修道院に入るが1823年に脱走し，フリーメーソン組織の助けでアメリカに亡命，数年後に変名で再びヨーロッパに戻り，スイスに落ち着く。メッテルニヒの反動政治を批判しアメリカ民主主義をたたえる著作を英独両国語で書いたほか，《船室の書》(1841)等の小説で新世界の活気ある生活をみごとに描き出した。【石井不二雄】
