1793‐1864 Austrian author. His real name was Karl Postl. Born in southern Moravia, he entered a Catholic monastery in Prague, but escaped in 1823 and fled to America with the help of the Freemasons. A few years later, he returned to Europe under a pseudonym and settled in Switzerland. He wrote works in both English and German criticizing Metternich's reactionary politics and praising American democracy, and he beautifully depicted the vibrant life of the New World in novels such as The Cabin Book (1841).
