Ladoga [Lake] - Ladoga
A lake in northern Russia. The second largest lake in Europe after the Caspian Sea. Area 18,135 km2 . Average depth 51 m, maximum depth 230 m. Frozen from December to April. There are about 500 small islands. Water from Lake Onega and Lake Ilmen flows into the lake, and the Neva River flows into the Gulf of Finland. There is a large fish population. A navigable waterway is opened along the southern shore. In ancient Russia, it was on a trade route connecting Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea coastal countries, and the Byzantine Empire, and played an important role. Even today, it is an important point for inland water transportation in the European part of Russia.
