The countries that represent films made in Latin America, or what is known as "Latin American cinema," are Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina, but there is also a small but strong "Third World cinema" movement in Chile, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Cuba, and Bolivia.

In 1931, a group of Soviet filmmakers led by Sergei M. Eisenstein stayed in Mexico for about a year to document the state of post-revolutionary Mexico. They shot the unfinished film Viva Mexico!, which is said to have inspired the development of Mexican cinema.

　1931年，革命後のメキシコの姿を記録するためにセルゲイ･M.エイゼンシテインを中心とするソビエト映画人グループが約1年間メキシコに滞在，《メキシコ万歳！》(未完)を撮影するが，その刺激のもとにメキシコ映画は出発したといわれる。
