According to Marx, the formation of industrial capital presupposes personal freedom and the separation of direct laborers from the means of production (the so-called "double freedom"), both of which arise from the disintegration of the community. The formation of modern civil society was historically analyzed by Otsuka Hisao, Takahashi Kohachiro and others of the so-called Otsuka School of History (Lectures on Western Economic History, 1960). The communities studied here were primarily village communities, urban communities and guilds.
