A brown alga in the family Cylindrica in the order Polytrichum communes. It grows in colonies on rocks in the lower intertidal zone, or on the bodies of Sargassum plants. It often grows together with the same family, Polytrichum commune, but can be distinguished by the fact that this species is membranous and smooth, bag-like, while the latter has holes of various sizes. It is found off the coasts of Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku, and is also widely distributed around the world.

褐藻類ハバモドキ目カヤモノリ科の海藻。潮間帯下部の岩上に群落をつくったり，ホンダワラ類の藻体などに着生する。しばしば同科のカゴメノリと混生するが，本種は膜質でなめらかな袋状であるのに対して，後者は大小の穴をもっているので区別できる。北海道，本州，九州，四国沿岸に産し，そのほか世界に広く分布する。
