Chain drama

Japanese: 連鎖劇 - れんさげき

A stage play that uses film images. For example, a scene is projected onto a projection screen, the same actor on stage delivers his lines, and when the projection screen is pulled up to the ceiling, the play resumes. It is said that the first performance of this type was in September 1908 at the Miyatoza Theater in Tokyo, starring Sawamura Gennosuke IV as "Onna Samurai." In the early Taisho period, it became very popular at small theaters in Asakusa, and specialized actors such as Yamazaki Chonosuke of the Shinpa school emerged. A revision of the Entertainment Law in 1916 made it difficult to perform films and stage plays at the same time, and it has since almost disappeared. However, in recent years, Ichikawa Ennosuke III has adopted this technique in his kabuki performances.

映画の映像を利用した舞台劇。たとえば，ある場面を映写幕に映し，舞台上の同じ俳優がそのせりふをつけ，その映写幕を天井に引揚げると，再び舞台劇に連続していくというもの。 1908年9月，東京の宮戸座で4世沢村源之助主演の『女さむらい』が上演されたのがその最初といわれ，大正初期には浅草の小劇場で大流行し，新派の山崎長之輔のような専門俳優が出た。 16年の興行法改正で，映画，舞台劇の同時併演が困難となり，以後はほとんど姿を消した。しかし近年，3世市川猿之助が歌舞伎公演でこの手法を採用している。
