Paintings, carvings, or reliefs on the walls or ceilings of caves or rock shelters, or on free-standing rock surfaces, where the rocks are not prepared for their creation. They are also called rock paintings or rock art. They were made during the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, and some belong to the historical period. The pigments used for paintings are natural: yellow, red, and brown from iron oxides, black from manganese oxides and charcoal, and white from limestone, seashells, eggshells, and bird droppings. There are no blues, and green is found only in the latest rock paintings in India. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
