Sagae River

Japanese: 寒河江川 - さがえがわ

This river originates from Mount Asahi in the mid-west of Yamagata Prefecture, flows eastward, joining the Yotsuya River and other rivers originating from Mount Gassan, and flows into the Mogami River in Sagae City. It is 59 km long. It is the clearest river in the prefecture, and its downstream area is used for agricultural water. Large multipurpose dams such as the Sagae Dam have been constructed in the upstream area. The river basin is also home to Kaishu, Mazawa, Iwanesawa, and Hondoji, settlements that prospered due to ascetic practices at Mount Yudono.

山形県中西部，朝日岳に源を発し，途中月山から発する四ッ谷川などを合せて東流し，寒河江市で最上川に流入する川。全長 59km。県内で最も澄んだ川で，下流域では農業用水に利用されている。上流域では寒河江ダムなどのに大規模な多目的ダムが建設されている。また流域には，海味 (かいしゅう) ，間沢，岩根沢，本道寺など湯殿山行者で繁盛した集落がある。
