A fossil plant belonging to the gymnosperm Cycad order Bennettiales. It flourished in the Early Cretaceous. Its external shape is very similar to cycads, but its flowers resemble those of the Magnoliaceae family of angiosperms. The fossilized leaves are diamond-shaped and arranged in a spiral. Multicellular scale hairs grow densely between the petiole scars. Vascular bundles can be seen aligned along a regular outline on the petiole scars. It has streak tracheids like ferns. Most trunks are unbranched and clumpy. Large ones with a diameter of 0.5 m and a length of 4 m are known. Flowers have not yet been found in Japanese species, but foreign species are known to have many flowers (bisexual flowers) in the leaf axils.
