Also known as the American spiny mouse. A general term for a mammalian species of the genus Echimys in the family Echimyidae of the order Rodentia that resembles a mouse in appearance. It is found in northern and central South America, and there are about 10 species, including the Guiana spiny mouse ( Echimys armatus ). Its body length is 17-35 cm, and its tail length 15-30 cm. Its appearance is very similar to that of the wood mouse family, but its whole body is densely covered with short, needle-like bristles. Its tail is usually bare and lacks a tuft of hair. アメリカトゲネズミともいう。外形がネズミに似た齧歯(げつし)目エキミス科キノボリトゲネズミ属Echimysに属する哺乳類の総称。南アメリカの北部と中部に分布し,ギアナトゲネズミ(ヨロイキノボリトゲネズミ)Echimys armatusほか約10種がある。体長17~35cm,尾長15~30cm。外形はアカネズミ類によく似るが,全身に短い針状の剛毛を密生する。尾はふつう裸出し,毛の房を欠く。体の背面は黄褐色ないし赤褐色,腹面は淡褐色または白色。
