A port city on the east bank of the mouth of the Weser River in northwestern Germany. Since 1947, it has been part of the state of Bremen together with the city of Bremen. It is located about 65 km north of Bremen and was built in 1827 by Bremen Mayor Schmidt as the city's outer port, absorbing the two surrounding cities in 1947. It is famous for Columbus Pier and the port where large ocean-going ships depart and arrive for America and the Far East. Its industries include fishing, seafood processing, and shipbuilding. It is the country's largest fishing port and is known as a base for trawlers. Population: 114,031 (2010).
