Akiru Plateau

…In 1955, the three villages of Higashiakiru, Nishiakiru, and Tanishi in Nishitama County merged to form Akita Town, which was incorporated as a city in 1972 and renamed, and in 1995 merged with Itsukaichi Town to form Akiruno City. It is located on the Akiru Plateau, which consists of Kanto Loam and terrace gravel layers, along the Akigawa River that originates in the Okutama Mountains, with the Hamura and Kusabana Hills to the north and the Akigawa Hills to the south. The area has a long history of habitation, as can be seen from the Nishiakiru Stone Age Dwelling Site (History), the Kusabana and Hagada Dwelling Sites, and the Setooka Burial Mounds. …
