Gozzi, Gasparo

[died] December 26, 1786. Italian poet and playwright from Padua. He founded the Granelleschi Academy with his brother C. Gozzi in 1747. In addition to Rime piacevoli (1751), he wrote the satirical poem Difesa di Dante (58), which revived interest in Dante's Divine Comedy.

Died April 4, 1806. Venice, Italy. Together with his brother G. Gozzi, he founded the Granelleschi Academy in 1747. He valued tradition and was in sharp opposition to Goldoni's new plays. His most famous work is L'augellin bel verde (1765), the beautiful green bird.
