[Horticultural species]
In Japan, the most common type of Physalis cultivated for ornamental purposes is the Chinese nightshade, with its small varieties called Sanzun nightshade and its early, large-fruited varieties called Tamba nightshade (illustration). The Chinese nightshade P. pruinosa Bailey (English name: strawberry tomato) and P. pubescens L. are native to North America, and their ripe fruits are sweet and can be eaten raw or cooked. In addition, the Sennari nightshade P. angulata L., an annual species native to tropical America whose calyx does not turn red, has become naturalized.
