A British law enacted in 1764 that ordered colonial assemblies in North America to prohibit the issuance of paper money and to promptly withdraw all paper money already issued. This prevented merchants in the home country from accepting the paper money issued by the colonies, which had depreciated in trade with the colonies. However, for colonies that did not produce precious metals, suffered from overpayments in trade with the home country, and had potential for economic growth, paper money was not only a means of exchange, but also a means of raising funds for economic growth and for war and disaster reconstruction, and was used as legal tender to pay taxes and repay debts.
