1869‐1945 German female poet. Born into a wealthy Jewish family in Elberfeld (now Wuppertal). She married, had one child, then divorced, and began her literary career in Berlin. Her literary beginnings belong to the era of Naturalism and Art Nouveau, but her lyric poetry frankly sings of love for God, nation, relatives, and the opposite sex, with a deep yearning and feminine sensibility that also permeates nature and the universe, and together with her fairy-tale-like prose works that blend reality and fantasy, she opened up new ground in the representation of inner thoughts. In 1932, she was awarded the Kleist Prize. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
