A king who restored the Chola dynasty of southern India. Reigned from 985 to 1016. He restored the kingdom, which had been weakened by the Rashtrakuta dynasty in the second half of the 10th century, and together with his son Rajendra I, ruled southern India for about half a century, enhancing its prestige. The king's expeditions were extensive. First, he defeated the combined forces of Kerala, Pandya, and Ceylon, and tried to gain control of Malabar and gain the right to trade with the west. He then sent a navy to attack the Maldives, an important base for Arabian trade.

南インドのチョーラ朝中興の英主。在位985‐1016年。10世紀の後半ラーシュトラクータ朝によって弱体化していた王国を再興し，彼の息子ラージェーンドラ1世とともに約半世紀の間南インドを支配してその国威を高めた。国王の遠征事業は広範であった。まず，ケーララ，パーンディヤ，セイロンの連合勢力を破り，マラバールをその支配下において西方貿易の権利を手中に入れようとした。その後アラビア貿易の重要な拠点であったモルジブ諸島にも海軍を送って攻撃した。
