He overthrew Gratian, and ruled Britain, Gaul, and Spain. He forced Theodosius I of the East to recognize him as emperor, supported Catholicism, and suppressed heresy. In 387, he suddenly invaded Italy, and pursued Valentinian II, forcing him to flee to Thessalonica. As a result, he started a war with Theodosius I in 388, and was defeated by him and executed.
