Omachi [city] - Omachi

Japanese: 大町[市] - おおまち
Omachi [city] - Omachi
A city in the northwest of Nagano Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Omachi, the central city, is located at the northern end of the Matsumoto Basin. In the Middle Ages, the castle of the Nishina clan was located here, and it developed as the intersection of the Itoigawa, Omachi, and Ikeda highways. Vegetables and apples are grown mainly in the basin. Two major factories, one for aluminum and one for spinning, were located here, but in recent years, small and medium-sized companies producing electrical equipment and precision equipment have moved in and are developing. In the north are the three Nishina Lakes, and in the west is the mountainous region of the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps) that belong to the Chubu Sangaku National Park, with Mt. Yari and Mt. Mimata Renge towering above, making it a base for mountain climbing. There is a city mountain museum where valuable materials related to the Northern Alps are on display. The Oito Line and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route pass through the city. There are many cultural properties related to the Nishina clan, including Nishina Shrine (both the main hall and the inner gate are national treasures) and Nyakuichioji Shrine (an important cultural property). In January 2006, Yasaka Village and Miasa Village in Kitaazumi County were incorporated. Area: 565.15 km2 . Population: 29,801 (2010).
