Civil law scholar. Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Law, Kyoto Imperial University in 1917 (Taisho 6), he became a professor at the same university in 1925. He resigned from the university due to the Kyoto University Incident in 1933 (Showa 8), became a professor at Osaka University of Commerce (now Osaka City University) in 1940, and became president of Ritsumeikan University in 1945 (Showa 20), retiring in 1969. In the field of civil law, he achieved many accomplishments with his precise theories. For example, his "Theory of Infringement of Rights" changed the structure of tort law by replacing the infringement of rights in Article 709 of the Civil Code with illegality. On the other hand, as president of Ritsumeikan University, he attempted to democratize universities and created the so-called Ritsumeikan Method (council method). He has written many books and papers. His works include "Studies on Special Problems in Civil Law I and II" (1925), "Theory of Infringement of Rights" (1930), "Studies on Abuse of Rights" (1949), "Property Law" (1956), "Contract Law (Part 1)" (1958), "Law" (1961), "Possession and Ownership" (1962), and "Contract Law (Part 2)" (1975).
