Kariya Castle

Japanese:
Kariya Castle
Hirajiro (castle on the plains ) was located in Kariya City, Aichi Prefecture. Its correct name is Kariya Castle (the spelling of Kariya was changed when the city was established in 1950). It was built at the northern end of an inlet called Kinugawaura in the city. It was built by Mizuno Tadamasa in 1533 (Tenbun 2), who made it his new castle and moved his headquarters from Ogawa Castle (Higashiura Town, Chita County) (there are other theories about this). Tokugawa Ieyasu's real mother, Odai, was Tadamasa's daughter and moved from Kariya Castle to Matsudaira Hirotada (Ieyasu's father) of Okazaki Castle (Okazaki City). After Tadamasa's death, Nobumoto (Odai's older brother), who inherited the family headship, left the Imagawa clan and joined the Oda clan, so Odai was divorced from the Matsudaira family. In 1575 (Tensho 3), Nobumoto , the lord of Kariya Castle, was suspected of colluding with the Takeda clan due to slanderous accusations by Nobunaga's vassal, Sakuma Nobumori, and was killed by Ieyasu at Daijuji Temple in Okazaki by Nobunaga's orders. Nobumori became the lord of the castle in his place, but in 1580 (Tensho 8), Nobunaga banished Nobumori and returned Kariya Castle to Mizuno Tadashige (Nobumoto and Odai's younger brother). Tadashige was then transferred to Kobe Castle in Ise by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but returned to the lordship of Kariya Castle in 1594 (Bunroku 3). In 1600 (Keicho 5), Tadashige's son Mizuno Katsunari became the lord of Kariya Domain with a fief of 30,000 koku, made Kariya Castle his residence, and became the first lord of the Nishio Domain. After that, Katsunari was transferred to Yamatokoriyama, and in 1632 (Kan'ei 9) he was transferred to Yoshida Castle in Mikawa, so Katsunari's younger brother Tadakiyo became the lord of Kariya Domain (castle lord). After that, after the succession of the Fukamizo Matsudaira, Hisamatsu Matsudaira, Inagaki, Abe, Honda, and Miura clans, in 1747 (Enkyo 4) Doi Toshinobu, who was the lord of Nishio Castle in Mikawa, entered the castle, and the Doi clan continued for nine generations until the Meiji Restoration. With the abolition of the feudal domains and establishment of prefectures in 1871 (Meiji 4), Kariya Domain was abolished, and Kariya Castle was abandoned. Currently, the site of the main citadel of Kariya Castle has been developed as Kame Castle Park, and parts of the earthworks and moats surrounding the main citadel remain. It is about a 15-minute walk from Kariyashi Station on the Meitetsu Mikawa Line. ◇It is also called Kame Castle.
