...Unlike simple birth control, family planning starts from the basic principle that "all children born should be wanted." The term family planning became popular in Western countries in the 1930s after the Great Depression, but even then, emphasis was placed on the lifestyle of practicing birth control rather than on the techniques involved. When making family plans, it is considered desirable to select the best conditions based on the health of the mother and child, the family's economic situation, housing conditions, and other individual circumstances of the family.

...The term "birth control" was once commonly used, but since the purpose is to restrict conception rather than to restrict childbirth, and because there is resistance to the word "restriction," the term "birth control" has come to be used. On the other hand, family planning is a term that concerns how many children a family will have and when, so it has a different meaning from contraception. In relation to sterilization surgery, contraception allows pregnancy if it is discontinued, while sterilization surgery is the most reliable but irreversible if left untreated, making it different from contraception.
