When the α-carboxyl group of one amino acid and the α-amino group of another amino acid form an acid amide bond, this bond is called a peptide bond. Compounds formed by peptide bonds are peptides, and they are the basic structure of proteins. When a peptide consists of two amino acids it is called a dipeptide, when it consists of three amino acids it is called a tripeptide, and when it consists of multiple amino acids it is called a polypeptide. Peptides are usually written with the N-terminal amino acid with the α-amino group on the left and the C-terminal amino acid with the α-carboxyl group on the right, and are named as the acyl derivative of the C-terminal amino acid. In other words, the tripeptide in the diagram is alanylglycylphenylalanine.

一つのアミノ酸のα-カルボキシル基と，ほかのアミノ酸のα-アミノ基とが酸アミド結合を形成している場合，この結合をペプチド結合という．ペプチド結合により形成された化合物がペプチドであり，タンパク質の基本的な構造である．ペプチドが二つのアミノ酸よりなる場合をジペプチド，三つのアミノ酸よりなる場合をトリペプチドといい，多数のアミノ酸よりなる場合をポリペプチドという．ペプチドは，通常，α-アミノ基を有するN末端アミノ酸を左に，α-カルボキシル基を有するC末端アミノ酸を右に書き，C末端アミノ酸のアシル誘導体として名づけられる．すなわち，図のトリペプチドはアラニルグルシルフェニルアラニンである．
