Rājataranginī (English spelling)

A book written by Kalhana around 1149 that describes the history of Kashmir in India from ancient times to the contemporary period in chronological order. It consists of 8 chapters and 7,826 verses. It is translated as "The Line of Kings." The author was a Brahmin of a distinguished family who served in the court of King Harsha of Kashmir. He was well versed in Sanskrit literature and wrote this book after researching legends, inscriptions and buildings. It is a beautifully written verse that praises the achievements of successive kings. The first half, which deals with the ancient period, is of little value as a source of information, but the section that covers the Karkota dynasty from the 7th century onwards and the 12 generations of the Lohara dynasty that followed, over a period of about 150 years, is a valuable resource for the policies, ruling systems, religion, lifestyle and customs of the kings.

1149年ごろカルハナKalhanaがインドのカシミールの歴史について太古から同時代まで編年体で叙述した書。8章、7826頌(しょう)からなる。訳は『諸王の流れ』。著者はカシミールのハルシャ王の宮廷に仕えた名門のバラモンであって、サンスクリット文学作品に精通していたうえ、伝説、碑文や建造物を調べて、この書を著した。これは美文調の韻文で歴代の諸王の事績をたたえたものであり、古い時代を扱った前半は資料的価値が乏しいが、7世紀以後のカルコータ朝、そのあとのローハラ朝12代、約150年を記した部分は、諸王の政策、支配体制、宗教や生活、慣習などについて貴重な資料となっている。
