Papuan - Papuan (English spelling)

Japanese: パプア人 - パプアじん（英語表記）Papuan

It can refer to the people who live in the highlands of New Guinea, or to the people who live in Papua New Guinea (eastern New Guinea). The highlanders are racially Australoid or Oceanic Negrito, and are the oldest group to have pushed out from the Asian continent into the Pacific Ocean. These people arrived on New Guinea about 30,000 years ago, but were pushed into the highlands by the Mongoloids who arrived later. They are generally called New Guinea Highlanders, and form a distinct racial group from the rest of Melanesia.

ニューギニア島の高地に住む人々を指す場合と，パプア･ニューギニア(ニューギニア島東部)に住む人々を指す場合がある。高地に住む人々は，人種的にはオーストラロイドまたはオセアニック･ネグリトといわれ，アジア大陸から太平洋に向かって押し出された最古の集団である。これらの人々は約3万年前にニューギニア島に到着していたが，後から来たモンゴロイド系に高地に追いやられた。一般にニューギニア高地人と呼ばれ，他のメラネシア地域とは異なる人種集団を形成している。
