…As a classical scholar and defender of the national language, he wrote important treatises such as On the Similarity of French and Greek (1566) and On the Superiority of the French Language (1579), as well as the strange book A Defence of Herodotus (1566), a scathing satire of the corruption of Catholic society and a wild array of Rabelais-style anecdotes. The writing and publication of his major work, The True Treasures of the Greek Language (6 volumes, folio, 1572), cost him dearly, and he died in Lyon in the depths of financial hardship. The Bible that Robert published in Geneva in 1551 was the first to introduce a chapter division, which was later officially adopted by the Catholic Church, and the division of the Bible into chapters that he introduced has been followed to this day. …

…After taking over the family business with his brother in 1827, he devoted himself to printing and publishing academic books such as those of Champollion. Of particular note are his efforts in reprinting Henri Etienne's great work, "The True Treasures of the Greek Language," which he enlarged and revised with the help of many international experts and used types he himself cast for the purpose (1831-65, 9 volumes in bifold format); his publication of the "Library of Ancient Greek Authors," which also mobilized many scholars and included a Latin translation after collating the manuscripts; and his new and expanded edition of Du Cange's (1610-88) "Dictionary of the Middle Ages" (first published in 1678) (1840-50, 7 volumes). The contributions these conscientious publishers made to the study of Greek and medieval culture are immeasurable. …
