...The Aoi tsuba has a four-leaf shape with ridges in the center of the four sides, and was used for a long time, even for the thread-wrapped swords used by samurai in the Edo period. The kasuri tsuba was named after the shape of the kasuri rice cakes used as offerings to the gods, and is oval in shape, and later came to be called kasuri-gata (sho-mu-gata) because it closely resembles the shape of the aori (shira-mu) of horse harness.
