Oblique shape - Aorigata

...The Aoi tsuba has a four-leaf shape with ridges in the center of the four sides, and was used for a long time, even for the thread-wrapped swords used by samurai in the Edo period. The kasuri tsuba was named after the shape of the kasuri rice cakes used as offerings to the gods, and is oval in shape, and later came to be called kasuri-gata (sho-mu-gata) because it closely resembles the shape of the aori (shira-mu) of horse harness. The kasuri tsuba seen on the Hyogo Kusari-tachi combines a scabbard and other metal fittings with an osetsupa (main feather) carved with the same pattern, and shows the most advanced craftsmanship of the tsuba of the time. ...

…葵鐔は四葉形の4辺の中央に稜をたてた形で，江戸時代の武家所用の糸巻太刀まで長く使用されている。粢鐔は神饌用の粢餅の形から名づけられたもので，楕円形をなし，後に馬具の障泥（あおり）の形状によく似るところから障泥形ともいわれている。兵庫鎖太刀にみる粢鐔は，鞘（さや）や他の金具と同一文様を彫った大切羽（おおせつぱ）を組み合わせたもので，当時の鐔の中で最も高度な技術をみせている。…
