Walking fish - Kinoboriuo (English spelling)

A general term for tropical freshwater fishes of the genus Anabas , family Aegidae, order Perciformes, class Osteichthyes. They are widely distributed from southern China to Southeast Asia, living in lakes and rivers. They are found deep inland in the Mekong River and other areas, and are eaten. Although they are called tree-climbing fish, they do not climb tall trees, but are actually ground-crawling fish. In rainy seasons, they move from one puddle to another by spreading their pectoral fins and gill covers to support their body and twisting their tails. They can also remain in places like the few remaining puddles after the water has subsided as the rainy season changes to the dry season. They can do this because they have an epibranchial organ that allows them to breathe air. The epibranchial organ is the upper part of the first gill arch that extends into the epibranchial cavity above the gill cavity, and is transformed into three or more petal-shaped mucous membranes. The epidermis is densely populated with capillaries, and the body breathes air inhaled through the mouth.

The ornamental fish imported to Japan is Anabas testutineus , which grows to 25cm in length in the wild but does not grow to more than 20cm in an aquarium. The optimum water temperature is 18-30°C. They spawn when they are 12-13cm deep. They lay 100-200 eggs at a time among floating plants. They hatch in 24 hours at 27°C and start eating food one week later. The fry can be raised on brine shrimp (the arthropod Artemia).

All fish in the suborder Aeoglossinae have epibranchial organs, large left and right nasal bones that are suturized to each other and to the frontal bone, and cover the middle ethmoid bone as a whole. Currently, the suborder Aeoglossinae consists of 15 genera and about 70 species, distributed in southwestern Africa, India, Southeast Asia, southern China, and the Korean Peninsula. In addition to the Aeoglossinae, the suborder also includes the Taiwan goldfish, paradise fish, Korean crucian carp, betta, and gouramis.

硬骨魚綱スズキ目キノボリウオ科アナバス属Anabasの熱帯淡水魚の総称。中国南部から東南アジアに広く分布し、湖沼、河川にすむ。メコン川などでは内陸の奥深くまで分布し、食用にされている。キノボリウオといわれるが、高い木に登ることはなく、実際には地面をはう魚である。スコールのなかなどで、一つの水たまりからほかの水たまりまで、胸びれと鰓蓋(さいがい)を広げて体を支え、尾をくねらせて地面を移動する。また、雨期から乾期にかわって水が引いたあとの、わずかに残った水たまりのような場所にも居残っていることができる。このようなことができるのは、上鰓器官(じょうさいきかん)という空気呼吸を可能にするものをもっているためである。上鰓器官は、鰓腔(さいこう)の上方にある上鰓腔に第1鰓弓(さいきゅう)の上部が延長し、3枚またはそれ以上の花弁状の粘膜に変形したものである。その表皮には毛細血管が多量に分布し、口から吸い込んだ空気を呼吸する。

　観賞魚として日本に輸入されているのはアナバス・テスタチネウスAnabas testutineusで、野生では体長25センチメートルになるが、水槽内では20センチメートル以上にはならない。適水温は18～30℃。12～13センチメートルで産卵する。1回の産卵は100～200粒で、浮き草の間に産む。27℃で、24時間で孵化(ふか)、1週間後に餌(えさ)を食べる。稚魚はブラインシュリンプ（節足動物のアルテミア）を餌として飼育が可能である。

　キノボリウオ亜目の魚類は、すべて上鰓器官をもち、左右の鼻骨が大きく、相互に、また前頭骨とも縫合し、全体として中篩骨(ちゅうしこつ)を覆っている点で共通している。現在、キノボリウオ亜目は15属約70種が、アフリカ南西部、インド、東南アジア、中国南部、朝鮮半島に分布する。キノボリウオのほか、タイワンキンギョ、パラダイスフィッシュ、チョウセンブナ、ベタ、グーラミー類が含まれている。
