?-1858 A female leader of the Indian nationalist movement. A hero of the Indian Mutiny (Sepoy Mutiny). Born to the descendants of the Maratha Confederacy, she married Gangadhar Rao of the Jhansi Kingdom. Due to the British policy of annexing kingdoms without legitimate children, they were annexed after the king's death. When the rebellion broke out in 1857, she became a leader on the rebel side, cooperating with people affiliated with the Maratha Confederacy and being a capable and courageous commander of the rebel army.
