A city in the Vitebsk Oblast in northern Belarus. It is located about 100 km west-northwest of the oblast capital, Vitebsk, on the Western Dvina River. Industries such as construction materials, glass fiber, wood processing, brewing, and food processing are based here. There is a local museum. The town first appeared in records in 862 and flourished as a trading center. There are many historical sites, including the remains of a city wall and a 12th-century cathedral.
