Kaibon (English spelling) basin

Kaibon (English spelling) basin

A depression in the ocean floor that is circular to nearly square in shape. It doesn't matter how big it is. Because they are surrounded by high elevations such as ocean ridges, ocean rises, and plateaus, as well as continents and island arcs, sedimentation is abundant and the ocean floor is often flat. They come in various sizes, with the Kuril Basin located just north of the Kuril Islands in the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk being a representative small one, and the Northwest Pacific Basin located east of Japan being a representative large one. The Kuril Basin is surrounded by land on all sides, and is a representative example of an ocean basin that is flat due to the sediments. In contrast, the Northwest Pacific Basin is a representative example of an ocean basin that still has unevenness, as the Kuril Trench, Japan Trench, and Izu-Ogasawara Trench on the continental side dam up sediments from the land.
