Kano City - Kano City
During the Sengoku period, a free market was established within the grounds of the Shinshu temple Entoku-ji in Kano-go, Atsumi County, Mino Province (present-day Gifu City). The temple town of Entoku-ji (called Josenbo during the Sengoku period) is believed to have been established around the 15th century, and it is believed that the river people of the Kiso River and Nagara River, and the mountain people of the Mino mountain area, who became followers of the Shinshu sect, built the town and settled there. According to the book of rules of Oda Nobunaga, which is held by Entoku-ji, in 1567, immediately after Nobunaga occupied Inabayama Castle (Gifu Castle), he guaranteed the residents of Kano's free movement within his domain, exempted them from borrowing money, borrowing rice, land taxes, and various duties, and prohibited forced purchases, violence, fighting, and arguments, thereby reaffirming the privileges that had been held by the temple's free market. Kano City was a self-governing free market, but its privileges were gradually taken away by the feudal lords' power, and in the early Edo period it was absorbed into Kano Castle and disappeared.
