Epicycle

Japanese: 周転円 - しゅうてんえん

A small circle with a point moving on a single circumference as its center. The former is called an epicycle. It was mainly used in astronomy to describe the apparent motion of celestial bodies. If we consider the Earth to be at the center of the epicycle and the planets to move at a constant speed on the epicycle, the apparent motion of the planets can be explained to some extent. The most famous example is that of Ptolemy's Earth-centered universe system, but Copernicus, who advocated a sun-centered universe system, also used epicycles to describe the motion of the planets.

一つの円周上を動く点を中心とする小さい円。前者は導円と呼ばれる。主として，天文学で天体の見かけの運行を記述するのに使われた。地球が導円の中心にあり，惑星が周転円上を一定の速度で動くと考えると，惑星の見かけの運動をある程度説明できる。プトレマイオスの地球中心の宇宙体系で用いられているのがもっとも著名な例だが，太陽中心の宇宙体系を唱えたコペルニクスも，惑星の運行の記述には周転円を用いている。
