Musical film

A genre of film in which the story unfolds mainly through song and dance. It is heavily influenced by stage musicals, and has many elements that are different from regular feature films, such as the singing ability and dancing ability of the lead actor, as well as the fact that songwriters, composers, and choreographers play major roles.

With the success of The Jazz Singer (part-talkie) in 1927, movies entered the full-fledged talkie era, music became an important means of expression, and movies centered on song and dance were actively produced. Many works that fully incorporated the charm of music were released in various countries, such as Le Million (1931) in France and The Meeting (1931) in Germany. Hollywood movies in particular, such as The Love Parade (1929) and Broadway Melody (1929), inherited the format of stage musicals such as operettas and revues, and gradually built up their own unique genre, the musical film. Especially from the 1930s to the 1940s, musical films became more sophisticated, with the musical scenes composed and directed by Busby Berkeley (1895-1976) in films such as 42nd Street (1933) and The Gold Diggers (1933) creating a style with gorgeous visual images, and the singing and dancing duo Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers (1911-1995) creating a free and rhythmic style in films such as The Continental (1934) and Top Hat (1935). Many musical stars, including Judy Garland, appeared, and many masterpieces such as The Wizard of Oz (1939) were produced.

After World War II, movies became more colorful and larger in size, which also benefited musical films. During this period, MGM musicals entered a golden age under producer Arthur Freed (1894-1973) and dancer and choreographer Gene Kelly (1912-1996), producing masterpieces such as "Dance" (1949), "An American in Paris" (1951), and "Singin' in the Rain" (1952) one after another, and skilled film directors such as Stanley Donen (1924-2019) and Vincente Minnelli appeared in musical films. However, in the mid-1950s, audience numbers began to plummet due to competition from television, and the production of musical films also decreased. The big-screen adaptation of the Broadway hit musical, "Oklahoma! Although some excellent works were produced, such as "The King and I" (1955), "South Pacific" (1956), "West Side Story" (1961), "My Fair Lady" (1964), and "The Sound of Music" (1965), the studio's decline was undeniable.

On the other hand, France saw the emergence of new attempts to carry all dialogue in song, such as in "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" (1964), and America produced excellent traditional musicals such as "Cabaret" (1972) starring Liza Minnelli, and rock musicals such as "Jesus Christ Superstar" (1973) and "Hair" (1979). Later, musical films began to show new faces with films set in the world of show business such as "Saturday Night Fever" (1977) and "All That Jazz" (1979), and in the 1980s produced excellent works such as the opera film "Carmen" (1983) and the autobiographical film "Bird" (1988), as well as works such as "Dancer in the Dark" (2000), which used musical scenes symbolically. Then, in the 1990s, previously unknown Indian musical films became known, and entertainment works such as "Muthu" (1995) captivated audiences around the world.

It was said that musical films as a genre declined with the decline of Hollywood movies, but in the 2000s, signs of a revival began to appear. Works such as "Moulin Rouge" (2001) and "Chicago" (2002), which are set in glorious times of the past, "The Producers" (2005), which satirizes show business, "Rent" (2005), which depicts the dreams and frustrations of modern young people based on the opera "La Bohème," "Dreamgirls" (2006) and "Hairspray" (2007), which depict the dreams of young people in the 1960s, and "Nine" (2009), a musical version of Federico Fellini's "8½" (1963), have also been produced. Many of these are film adaptations of stage musicals, but they depict the world of young people's dreams and reality, love and anxiety, etc. While inheriting tradition, musical films have changed with the times, and it seems that new possibilities are being explored in the diverse expressions of today's movies.

映画の一ジャンルで、歌や踊りを中心にストーリーが展開するものをいう。舞台のミュージカルからの影響も大きく、主演俳優の歌唱力や踊りの魅力とともに、作詞・作曲者や振付者が大きな役割を果たす点など、一般の劇映画とは異なる要素も多い。

　1927年の『ジャズ・シンガー』（パート・トーキー）の成功によって、映画は本格的なトーキー時代を迎え、音楽が重要な表現手段となり、歌や踊りを中心とした映画が盛んに製作されるようになった。フランスでは『ル・ミリオン』（1931）、ドイツでは『会議は踊る』（1931）など、音楽の魅力を十二分に取り入れた多くの作品が各国で発表された。なかでもハリウッド映画は、『ラヴ・パレィド』（1929）や『ブロードウェイ・メロディ』（1929）など、オペレッタやレビューといったステージ・ミュージカルの形式を受け継ぎながら、しだいにミュージカル映画という独自のジャンルを築き上げていった。ことに1930年代から1940年代にかけて、一方で、『四十二番街』（1933）や『ゴールド・ディガース』（1933）など、バズビー・バークリーBusby Berkeley（1895―1976）の構成・演出によるミュージカル場面で豪華絢爛(けんらん)な視覚的イメージのスタイルが生み出され、また他方で、『コンチネンタル』（1934）や『トップ・ハット』（1935）など、フレッド・アステアとジンジャー・ロジャースGinger Rogers（1911―1995）の歌と踊りの名コンビによる自由でリズム感にあふれたスタイルが生まれるなど、ミュージカル映画はより洗練されていった。そして、ジュディ・ガーランドをはじめ多くのミュージカル・スターが出現し、『オズの魔法使』（1939）など数々の名作が生み出された。

　第二次世界大戦後、映画の色彩化と大型化によって、ミュージカル映画もその恩恵を受けることになるが、この時期、プロデューサーのアーサー・フリードArthur Freed（1894―1973）と、ダンサーであり振付者のジーン・ケリーGene Kelly（1912―1996）によって、MGMミュージカルが黄金時代を迎え、『踊る大紐育(ニューヨーク)』（1949）、『巴里(パリ)のアメリカ人』（1951）、『雨に唄(うた)えば』（1952）などの名作が次々と生み出され、スタンリー・ドーネンStanley Donen（1924―2019）、ビンセント・ミネリといったミュージカル映画に巧みな映画監督も登場した。しかし、1950年代なかばになると、テレビとの競合によって観客数が激減し始め、ミュージカル映画の製作も減少していった。ブロードウェーのヒット・ミュージカルの大型画面による映画化『オクラホマ！』（1955）、『王様と私』（1956）、『南太平洋』（1958）、『ウェスト・サイド物語』（1961）、『マイ・フェア・レディ』（1964）、『サウンド・オブ・ミュージック』（1965）などの優れた作品もつくられたが、その衰退は否定しようもなかった。

　しかしその一方で、フランスでは『シェルブールの雨傘』（1964）のような会話まですべて歌で運ぶ新しい試みが登場し、またアメリカでも優れた正統派ミュージカルであるライザ・ミネリ主演の『キャバレー』（1972）、ロック・ミュージカルの『ジーザス・クライスト・スーパースター』（1973）や『ヘアー』（1979）などが製作された。その後、ショー・ビジネスの世界を背景にした『サタデー・ナイト・フィーバー』（1977）や『オール・ザット・ジャズ』（1979）などで新たな相貌(そうぼう)をみせ始めたミュージカル映画は、1980年代にはオペラ映画『カルメン』（1983）や自伝映画『バード』（1988）などの優れた作品を生み出し、またミュージカル・シーンを象徴的に用いた『ダンサー・イン・ザ・ダーク』（2000）のような作品も製作された。そして、1990年代にはこれまで未知だったインドのミュージカル映画が知られるようになり、『ムトゥ　踊るマハラジャ』（1995）のような娯楽作品が世界の観客を魅了した。

　ハリウッド映画の凋落(ちょうらく)とともにジャンルとしてのミュージカル映画は衰退したといわれたが、2000年代に入ると復興の兆しがみえ始めた。過去の絢爛な時代を舞台にした『ムーラン・ルージュ』（2001）や『シカゴ』（2002）、ショウビジネスを風刺した『プロデューサーズ』（2005）、オペラ「ラ・ボエーム」を下敷きにして現代の若者たちの夢や挫折を描いた『レント』（2005）、1960年代の若者たちの夢を描いた『ドリーム・ガールズ』（2006）や『ヘアスプレー』（2007）などの作品が製作され、またフェデリコ・フェリーニ監督の『8½』（1963）をミュージカル化した『ナイン』（2009）のような作品も生み出されている。その多くは舞台ミュージカルの映画化であるが、若者たちの夢と現実、愛と不安などの世界を描き出している。伝統を受け継ぎながら時代とともにミュージカル映画は変貌(へんぼう)してきており、その新たな可能性を今日の映画の多様な表情のなかで模索しているように思われる。
