A basilica church built in the early Christian period in Rome, Italy. "Fuori le mura" means outside the walls (of the ancient city of Rome). It is said that a memorial church of St. Paul (San Paolo) was originally located here on the Via Ostia. Construction began in the first half of the 4th century and was completed around 400. Under the patronage of Emperor Theodosius the Great and his family, it was considered one of Rome's most important churches, along with St. Peter's. The triumphal arch wall of the sanctuary is decorated with a magnificent mosaic showing a scene from the Apocalypse of John, donated by Galla Placidia, sister of Emperor Honorius, and the side walls of the nave are decorated with scenes from the Acts of the Apostles.
