The name of the province of the Alps under the rule of the Roman Empire. This province also included the Tyrol region and parts of Switzerland and Bavaria (Bavaria). The indigenous Raeti people, one side of which was Illyrian and the other Celtic, surrendered to the Romans in 15 BC and became a subject people. From a linguistic point of view, it is noteworthy that the people who lived in the central Alps spoke a language closely related to Etruscan. From the 3rd century onwards, they suffered from invasions by Germanic peoples. [Motomura Ryoji] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
