A village in Higashimuro District, on the eastern edge of Wakayama Prefecture. Population 593 (1995). Located on the north bank of Kitayama River, upstream of Kumano River, it is an exclave sandwiched between Mie and Nara Prefectures. Most of the village area is forest, with five settlements scattered along the Kitayama River, centered around Onuma. It has long been a producer of Kumano cedar, and all timber was transported by raft down the Kitayama River, so it has a strong connection with Shingu at the mouth of the Kumano River. When Muro District was divided into Wakayama Prefecture and Watarai Prefecture (now Mie Prefecture) in 1871 (Meiji 4), it was incorporated into Wakayama Prefecture as an exclave.
