Neutrons released by nuclear fission. When 235 U fission occurs by slow neutrons, 99.25% of all fission neutrons are released immediately after the fission as prompt neutrons. The remaining proportion are released later as delayed neutrons. The energy of fission neutrons ranges from over 10 MeV to thermal energy, but most are between 1 MeV and 2 MeV. The average number of neutrons released from the fission of 235 U and 239 Pu by thermal neutrons is 2.5 and 1.83, respectively.
