Treaty of Mersen

Japanese:
Treaty of Mersen

In 870, the East and West Frankish kingdoms concluded an agreement to divide the Kingdom of Lorthringen. After the death of Lothar I, who had acquired the throne and control of the Middle Frankish Kingdom (Lorthringen, Burgundy, and Northern Italy) by the Treaty of Verdun (843), his second son Lothar II inherited the Kingdom of Lorthringen. When the Carolingian line died out with the death of Lothar II in 869, West Frankish King Charles I annexed the Kingdom of Lorthringen. This act ignored the agreement between the East and West Frankish kingdoms concluded at Metz in 867, so East Frankish King Louis II tried to stop it by force, which almost led to war between the two kingdoms. However, a compromise was reached in Meerssen, northwest of Aachen, Netherlands, in 870, and Lorthringen and Friesland were divided into East and West Frankish kingdoms roughly along the line of the upper Moselle and lower Meuse rivers. However, conflicts continued and in 880, the East Frankish king Louis III gained western Lorraine as well by the Treaty of Libermont.
