In southern Buddhism, this festival is held to celebrate the birth, enlightenment, and death of Shakyamuni. In northern (Mahayana) Buddhism in China, Korea, Japan, and other countries, Shakyamuni's birth, enlightenment, and death are each considered to be separate days, and are celebrated on those days (for example, the Buddha's Birthday or Birthday Celebration on April 8, the Enlightenment Celebration on December 8, and the Nirvana Celebration on February 15). On the other hand, in southern Buddhist countries such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand, these are all considered to be the full moon day of the month of Vaishakha, which is the second month in the Hindu calendar, and grand festivals are held every year around the full moon day that falls on this day, which falls between the end of May and the beginning of June.

南方仏教で，釈迦の誕生，成道（じようどう），入滅を祝って行われる祭り。中国や朝鮮，日本などの北伝(大乗)仏教では，釈迦の誕生，成道，入滅はそれぞれ別の日のこととされ，それらの日ごとに祝われる(たとえば，4月8日の降誕会（ごうたんえ）または灌仏会（かんぶつえ），12月8日の成道会（じようどうえ），2月15日の涅槃会（ねはんえ）など)。一方，スリランカやミャンマー，タイなど南方仏教の諸国では，これらはいずれもインド暦で第2月とされるバイシャーカvaiśākha月の満月の日のこととされ，毎年，この日にあたる5月末から6月初めの満月の日を中心に，盛大な祭りが行われる。
