Lewis and Clark Expedition

Led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, this expedition was the first American to cross the continent from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Ordered by President Jefferson, their mission was to reach the source of the Missouri River, explore a route to the Pacific Ocean, and study the geography, flora, fauna, and Indians. The 48-member expedition left St. Louis in May 1804, crossed the Rocky Mountains, reached the mouth of the Columbia River on the Pacific coast in November 1805, and returned to St. Louis in September 1806.
