A former town in Tamura County in central-eastern Fukushima Prefecture. The entire town is located on the Abukuma Highlands, with rice fields in the lowlands of the Makino River. The town's center is Kami-Oetsu, where the Ban'etsu East Line runs. There is a cement factory that uses limestone from Mt. Otakine, and tobacco cultivation is thriving. In March 2005, it merged with Takine Town, Tokoha Town, Funehiki Town, and Miyakoji Village in Tamura County to become a city, Tamura City. 36.66 km2 . 5,780 people (2003). 福島県中東部,田村郡の旧町。全町阿武隈(あぶくま)高地で高原状を呈し,牧野川の低地に水田が開ける。中心は磐越東(ばんえつとう)線が通じる上大越。大滝根山の石灰石を原料とするセメント工場が立地,葉タバコ栽培が盛ん。2005年3月田村郡滝根町,常葉町,船引町,都路村と合併し市制,田村市となる。36.66km2。5780人(2003)。
