Chemical formula: Ag 3 N. Common name for silver nitride. It is also called Berthollet's fulminate because it was first discovered by CL Berthollet. Silver oxide dissolves in concentrated aqueous ammonia to form ammine complex ions, but if this is left for a long time, a dark precipitate is formed. This is fulminate. It is extremely explosive and is dangerous, especially when subjected to shock; even shaking a liquid containing it can cause an explosion. Care must be taken when storing alkaline waste liquid containing silver ammonia. Silver fulminate (AgONC) is sometimes called fulminate, but it is actually a different substance.
