Small sea anemone - Small sea anemone

A marine animal belonging to the phylum Cnidaria, class Anthozoa, subclass Hexacorallia, order Actiniaria, family Actiniidae. It is distributed from Sagami Bay northward, and is abundant on the coast of Hokkaido. Its body is low and cone-shaped, with a foot disk about 5 cm in diameter, a mouth disk about 3 cm in diameter, and a height of 0.5 to 2 cm. The color of the body wall varies greatly, and can be white, red, blue, purple, green, brown, azuki bean, olive, dark green, orange, etc., and these colors may be mixed in a mosaic pattern or may show radial rays. Some are solid colored. The mouth disk and tentacles vary in color, such as dark red, dark green, and brown, depending on the color of the body wall, and the mouth disk has light brown radial rays. The lower half of the body wall has many hemispherical projections. The embryos expelled from the mother's mouth are pushed between the projections of the mother's body wall by the mother's tentacles, where they attach and metamorphose into young sea anemones, remaining there until they grow quite large, after which they leave the mother's body and attach to rocks. This name comes from the fact that adults attach their young to the body wall. They live in the intertidal zone of rocky and boulder-ridden coasts, and are often found in large numbers on the undersides of boulders.
